Objectives and Activities

The DIAKONIA Foundation is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation, affiliated to the Holy Archdiocese of Athens, but yet an independent legal entity.

It was founded in 1999 by His Beautitude the Archbishop of Athens and Greece Christodoulos, who chairs its twelve-member Administrative Board.

The DIAKONIA Foundation aims at helping young people who face psycho-social problems, especially drug addicts and reside in anyone of the 144 parishes of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens. DIAKONIA already has a network of forty priests in thirteen districts of the greater Athens area, who are trained in the field of drug prevention. These forty priests have already started working in their parishes: They promote prevention among their parishioners, in some cases in co-operation with the Prevention Centres of the Municipalities. They deal with drug users who come to them for help, trying to support them psychologically and guide them to one of the existing therapeutic programmes, until DIAKONIA runs its own. The priests’ work is supported by two professional social workers and a group of experienced volunteers.

DIAKONIA's by-laws foresees three action fields concerning the fight against drug addiction, i.e. Prevention, Therapy and Rehabilitation. It plans to create a) an Education, Training and Information Centre, b) a Prevention Centre, c) Treatment Centres and d) a Social Reintegration, Vocational Training and Rehabilitation Centre. For the last two years it is implementing preventive activities, both primary and secondary, by creating: a) two Primary Prevention Centres and b) two Counselling Centres for High-Risk Youth groups.

A. In the field of Primary Prevention DIAKONIA aims at helping people, especially children, adolescents, young adults develop skills and abilities, which will keep them away from self-destructive behaviour, such as drug use, and also teach them how to develop a positive attitude towards life, based on self-esteem and other positive personal and interpersonal skills, away from any addiction. It also aims at interfering with school communities, teachers and parents, so as to teach them constructive ways of helping children and youths.

The Primary Prevention Centre is a pilot programme run by DIAKONIA in Pangrati (Ymittou Str. 147, 116 33, tel.- fax.: 003-010 7486181) in co-operation with the Therapy Centre for Dependent Individuals (KETHEA) with which DIAKONIA is associated. The Therapy Centre for Dependent Individuals has undertaken the training of professionals and volunteers who in turn offer their services to our Foundation. KETHEA helps also in the supervision of this preventive implementation. The University of Athens has undertaken the evaluation of the programme. All services naturally are for greek citizens and free of charge.

B. In the field of Secondary Prevention DIAKONIA aims at young people, who are likely to become drug dependent informing them and their families about detoxication services and trying to convince them to start therapy by pursuing a suitable programme. It also aims at preventing youngsters with mild problematic behaviour from using drugs and other addictive substances by creating a network of supporting measures and structures, which are planned to offer them more opportunities in education, social life, training activities, improvement of family relations and psycho-social support. DIAKONIA has decided to create a Counselling Centre for High-Risk Youth groups in the Zografou area. In the field of Secondary Prevention too all services are for greek citizens and free of charge.
