Benedictus PP XVI τo His Beatitude Christodoulos Archbishop of Athens and All Greece

12/4/2006

To
His Beatitude Christodoulos
Archbishop of Athens and All Greece

As we prepare in these weeks to celebrate the Paschal Mystery with particular intensity, I send you warm and heartfelt greetings in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. With sentiments of fraternal charity, I thank you for your letter of 26 March last in which you express your concerns with regard to the omission of the title "Patriarch of the West" in the 2006 edition of the Annuario Pontificio.

I wish to assure you that I have given careful consideration to the observations contained in your letter, especially as I see in them a positive indication of our growing fraternal relationship and of the increasing desire for the re-establishment of full communion, a desire which I fully share.

In a recent communiqué, Cardinal Walter Kasper, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, explained the meaning of the decision to omit the title "Patriarch of the West". I have now asked him to make contact with you to explain this decision in more detail.

During this week, which for the Catholic Church is Holy Week, I will remember you in a special way in my prayers.

With these sentiments, I wish once again to assure you of my esteem and fraternal affection in the Lord.

From the Vatican, 12 April 2006

Benedictus PP XVI
